Thanks Danielle. Great question! As I state in the video, any definition of anything depends upon the purpose of the conversation. Different policy and management inquiries into the working lives of artists will therefore use different definitions. The Urban Institute study was specifically focused on "professional" artists. And their definition actually includes ANY kind of training – formal or informal, which can include a wide array of contexts and sources.

I absolutely agree that "training" is a narrow term that implies formal education. But there is value in focusing on artists that have some kind of focused and intensive development of their craft – whether from institutions, culturebearers, communities of practice, families and communities of culture, and beyond.
